The Ford Capri Perana was a particularly high-performance version of the Ford Capri.

The Ford Capri Perana is a legendary South African high-performance version of the Ford Capri. It was developed in the early 1970s by Basil Green Motors under the leadership of Basil Green.
When the Ford Capri arrived in South Africa in 1969, Basil Green wanted to transform it into a true muscle car. To achieve this, he installed the large 5.0-liter Ford Windsor V8 engine from the Ford Mustang into the relatively lightweight Capri body.
The result was the Ford Capri Perana V8:
-
5.0-liter V8 (302 Windsor)
-
around 281 horsepower
-
4-speed manual gearbox
-
rear-wheel drive
-
0–100 km/h in approximately 6.7 seconds
-
top speed of over 228 km/h
For its time, these figures were extremely impressive and made the Perana one of the fastest production cars in South Africa.
The Perana was also highly successful in motorsport. The most famous racing version, known as “Z181,” dominated South African touring car championships in 1970 and became a motorsport icon.
Only around 500 to 550 cars were ever built, making the Capri Perana very rare and highly valuable among collectors today.
The name “Perana” comes from the piranha fish. Since the name “Piranha” was trademarked, Basil Green simply changed the spelling to “Perana.”
Today, the Ford Capri Perana has true cult status:
-
one of the most famous South African performance cars
-
extremely popular among Ford and classic car enthusiasts
-
often called the “South African Mustang Killer”
Many fans consider it the most extreme official Capri version ever built.
